Janet G. Travell (1901-1997)
Janet Travell nacque nel 1901 da Willard e Janet Davidson Travell.
Suo padre era un medico che ha praticato per oltre sessant'anni, il suo entusiasmo per la vita e la medicina ha influenzato sia Janet sia la sorella Virginia a seguire le sue orme. Janet si è laureata al Wellesley College nel 1922 e nel 1926 ha conseguito il dottorato presso la Cornell University Medical College (New York City). Riceve il premio John Metcalf Polk Memorial per la media scolastica più alta durante tutti i quattro anni di corso in medicina. Fece due anni di tirocinio e residenza presso l'Ospedale di New York, contemporaneamente ha prestato servizio come chirurgo di ambulanza presso la polizia di New York City. Ha ottenuto il grado di tenente e ha descritto il periodo come "veramente affascinante e prezioso" per la sua formazione medica.
La dottoressa Janet Travell sposò John Powell, un gentiluomo del sud, banchiere di Wall Street e atleta di talento, nel 1929. Il matrimonio,che durò fino alla morte del signor Powell nel 1973, diede alla coppia due figlie, Janet e Virginia. Dopo il suo impegno all'ospedale di New York, la Dr Janet Travell divenne ricercatrice presso l'ospedale di Bellevue, studiando l'effetto dei digitali in migliaia di pazienti con polmonite lobare. Tornò poi a Cornell e cominciò a lavorare nel Dipartimento di Farmacologia come assistente e poi come professore nel 1952. Fu mentre stava studiando le malattie arteriose all'ospedale di Beth Israel a New York con il collega Josiah Macy, Jr. della Fondazione (1939-1941), che la dottoressa Travell si avvicinò ai problemi di dolore muscolare e scheletrico.
Janet Travell ha contribuito a sviluppare nuove tecniche anestetiche per il trattamento degli spasmi muscolari dolorosi utilizzando l'iniezione di procaina locale e spray come il cloruro di etile (oggi ampiamente utilizzato nella medicina sportiva). È stata questa esperienza pionieristica che ha cambiato la sua vita.
Nel 1955 fu invocata dal chirurgo ortopedico dell’allora senatore John F. Kennedy, che dopo aver subito degli interventi chirurgici al rachide, legati alle lesioni che aveva subito nella seconda guerra mondiale, era affetto da numerosi dolori muscolo-schelettrici. La dottoressa Travell è stata in grado di individuare le fonti muscolari del suo dolore cronico, trattandolo efficacemente iniettando procaina direttamente nei muscoli lombari del senatore. La Dottoressa scoprendo che una delle gambe di Kennedy era più corta dell'altra, gli ha ordinato scarpe speciali che avrebbero alleviato lo stress che questa condizione arrecava alla sulla schiena. Senza le competenze mediche della dottoressa Travell, Kennedy e la sua famiglia sono convinti che la carriera politica di John avrebbe raggiunto una fine prematura.
Quando John Kennedy fu eletto presidente nel 1960, nominò Janet Travell suo medico personale, facendone la prima donna ad occupare quella posizione.
Janet ha consigliato l’utilizzo di una sedia a dondolo per alleviare il dolore alla schiena del presidente Kennedy, questo divenne presto popolare e ne favorì l'uso tra il pubblico, che ha visto il presidente raffigurato nel suo rocker nell'ufficio ovale. (la dottoressa Travell si è impegnata nel curare gli aspetti del design delle sedute e ha lavorato come consulente a aziende come John Deere e Lockheed per produrre sedili più confortevoli e sostenenti per i trattori e gli aerei). Janet Travell continuerà a servire il presidente Lyndon Johnson dopo la morte del presidente Kennedy e lasciò la Casa Bianca nel 1965.
Janet Travell venne nominata dal personale della George Washington University, professore associato di medicina poco dopo aver lasciato la Casa Bianca. Continuò ad insegnare, scrivere e dare lezioni attive in tutto il paese fino alla morte del 1997.
Janet Travell è autrice di più di 100 articoli scientifici e co-autore, con il collega David Simons, del famoso libro a due volumi Myofascial Pain and Dysfunction: The Trigger Point Manual.
Nel 1968, la dottoressa Travell pubblicò la sua autobiografia, Office Hours: Day and Night. Ha detto di aver scritto per vari motivi: informare i giovani sulla professione medica, rappresentare ai genitori e agli educatori la vita di un medico di sesso femminile, presentare una filosofia di medicina ed un modo di vivere e registrare per la storia, ricordi personali dei suoi anni nella Casa Bianca. Nelle sue pagine troviamo una donna di incredibile vitalità fisica e mentale.
Lo zelo che la dottoressa Travell aveva per la vita trapelava anche nella sua carriera professionale. Le tecniche pionieristiche che ha sviluppato per il trattamento e il controllo del dolore muscolare sono state condivise con i colleghi e insegnate ad altri medici e tutt’oggi vengono studiate e portate avanti in tutto il mondo da medici e fisioterapisti.
